How to Deal with Fake Facebook Shut Down Messages

A prolific scam circulating Facebook and Instagram right now is the “Your-Page-Will-be-Shut-down” scam. You may be receiving 2-3 of these messages a day and they always attempt to look legitimate. What do you do about it? We have a few suggestions.

  1. Firstly, do not engage with the sender at all. If there is a legitimate reason for your Page or Instagram account to be shut down, you’ll receive an email and a notification in your account about a potential suspension. You will NOT receive a direct message into your account.
  2. Block and report the person who sent the message. By reporting the account, it will quickly be flagged and likely shut down which will help to stop the number of accounts affected by the scam.
  3. Take a moment to check your settings and make sure that your email address on file with Facebook/Instagram is accurate and accessible in case a legitimate notice is required.

The most important thing to do is to not click into any links in the message that is sent and do not provide any information to the message sender. Taking the time to report the account will help to reduce the number of scam messages received overall.
